Corregimiento de Agua Fria

Agua Fría Township – Darién, Panama

Agua Fría is one of the seven townships that make up the district of Santa Fe, in the province of Darién. It was officially established on July 29, 1998, and since then has been part of one of Panama’s regions with the greatest natural wealth and cultural diversity.

Location and Territory

The township covers approximately 284 km² and is located in a tropical rainforest area, typical of Darién. Its surroundings consist of mountains, rivers, and abundant vegetation—features that make this territory ecologically valuable.

Population

According to the 2010 census, Agua Fría has 2,692 inhabitants, representing a low population density. This dispersed distribution is common in the province of Darién due to its vast geographic extension and natural conditions.

The community is composed of a mix of Indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants, and settlers from other provinces of the country, such as Veraguas and Chiriquí, contributing to a diverse cultural identity.

History and Origin of the Name

According to local accounts, the name “Agua Fría” (“Cold Water”) comes from early loggers who, while searching for water in the mountains, found a pond with very cold water where they set up camp. That initial settlement gave rise to the community that today bears the name.

Economy and Local Life

Agua Fría’s economy is based mainly on agricultural and livestock activities, typical of rural communities in Darién. Although the area faces challenges in infrastructure and access, it retains significant potential for ecotourism initiatives thanks to its natural beauty and biodiversity.

Regional Importance

Beyond its size and natural diversity, Agua Fría plays an important role within the district of Santa Fe, especially after the administrative reorganization that consolidated its position as a township within this new territorial structure.
